Catholic tradition with room to breathe.
The short answer
Old Catholics are Christians who preserve Catholic sacramental and liturgical traditions while governing independently of the Roman Catholic hierarchy. Visitors familiar with Catholic worship will recognize the Eucharist, Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Marriage, Anointing, and ordained ministry.
What might feel different?
At St. Mychal’s, questions are welcome, clergy may be married, and divorced and remarried people can participate in sacramental life. LGBTQ+ individuals and couples are welcome. Our published parish practice offers Communion to believing Christians; if you have a question about receiving, please ask us.
Where we come from
The Old Catholic tradition has roots in European Catholic history, including Utrecht. After the First Vatican Council in 1869 – 1870, some Catholic communities organized outside Roman jurisdiction while retaining Catholic liturgy and episcopal ministry. Today different independent Catholic jurisdictions vary in governance and practice.
Apostolic and sacramental
We understand ourselves as part of the historic Catholic and apostolic tradition. For us, carrying the Gospel forward means feeding the hungry, comforting the grieving, welcoming those excluded, and celebrating grace.
If you are Roman Catholic or simply curious
You are welcome to visit and ask questions. You do not need to reject your history or have your beliefs settled before exploring this community. See Visit Us for practical details and Worship & Sacraments for our pastoral approach.
